eBay sales tax calculator: what the buyer pays and the fee on the tax

Type what something sold for and the buyer's sales tax rate. See the tax the buyer pays, how much of eBay's fee is charged on that tax, and what eBay pays you.

How sales tax works on an eBay sale

  • eBay collects it, not you. eBay works out, collects and pays the sales tax on orders shipped to buyers in every US state, Washington DC and Puerto Rico. You do nothing, eBay charges nothing for collecting it, and a seller cannot turn it off.
  • The buyer sees it at checkout. eBay adds it to the order total, worked out from the item's price, the kind of item and the delivery address.
  • The tax is not yours. eBay pays you the price and the shipping, less its fees; the tax goes to the state.
  • eBay's fee is charged on the tax. The final value fee is a percent of the total amount of the sale, and eBay's fee page counts the sales tax in that total. So the tax costs you the fee on it.
  • The rate is yours to type. This page has no rate for any place. It taxes the price and the shipping together, as the eBay fee calculator does; the tax on a real order is what eBay shows on it.

This page works a buyer in the US. Not counted here: an eBay Store's monthly subscription, a promoted listing's ad fee, and the extra fees a below-standard seller pays.

Paying for a promoted listing? The eBay Promoted Listings calculator charges its ad fee on the tax too.

Point and Sell turns phone photos of a box into eBay listings. The sales tax on each sale is eBay's to work out and collect. Start free.
